A must watch for Greece fans! 'My Life in Ruins' starring Nia Vardalos is centred around Georgia, a history professor, working as a tour guide at the time, since no other job offer seems to turn up. Georgia takes a travel group to visit different sites across Greece, where she eventually falls in love with Poupi Kakas, her bus driver (Alexis Georgoulis). All this happens, while a series of comic events kick in adding a humour element to the 'love story' part of the film.
Mike Reiss' movie is written along the lines of a typical romantic comedy. A single girl who falls for the 'weird looking', but cute after all guy. However the setting of Athens, Delphoi and other Greek beauties, in which the movie develops definitely adds to it.
Those of you who enjoy 'oscar material' this would not be your top choice. Beside that, 'My Life in Ruins' sets the lights on greek tourism and Greece's rich culture and history. Yet, it comes as no surprise, since it has been clear that Vardalos appreciates Greece, after having another movie filmed in Greece after 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding", which was a 'box office' success.
